World leading conservationists are launching a global campaign to combat the illegal trade in wildlife - and are calling on members of the public to help solve the crisis. Chester Zoo is leading the initiative in Europe in a battle to save hundreds of species threatened with extinction, joining forces with the international wildlife trade monitor TRAFFIC - as well as Taronga Zoo in Australia and San Diego Zoo in the USA. Experts hope that the new worldwide campaign will inspire the public to report offences when they see or suspect them via Wildlife Witness, a free smartphone app. More

Durrell's Professor Carl Jones is this year's winner of the world’s leading award for animal conservation, the Indianapolis Prize. Professor Jones has been recognised for bringing back at least nine species from the brink of extinction - work made possible through the implementation of hands-on animal husbandry techniques developed in contemporary zoological institutions. The UK's only two giant pandas, based at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo, are providing their support – and poo - to scientists at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) who aim to improve conservation in the wild through better understanding of exactly what members of this iconic species eat. More
