The Association believes that the best place to conserve wildlife is in the wild and encourages its members in their efforts to support field conservation work. A survey carried out in 2001 (available from the Association office) showed that during the previous three years (1997-2000) member collections supported 177 field conservation projects in 62 countries representing over 10 million pounds of expenditure. Members also supplied husbandry and management skills, staff and equipment for habitat and species conservation and essential materials for local education and awareness programmes in developing countries.
Zoos such as London, Jersey, Chester, Marwell, Paignton and Bristol are well known for their pioneering conservation work. However, all members contribute to the Association’s conservation objectives by raising awareness and essential funds for conservation at home and abroad. Zoos often form partnerships to increase their ability to conduct in situ work.
