Marine Reserves NOW
UK zoos and aquariums are joining The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) to help increase the profile of the Marine Reserves NOW campaign. The campaign aims to lobby government to set up a network of Marine Protected Areas. Protected areas would range in the amount of activity allowed but must include marine reserves – areas where no extraction or damaging activities are permitted. Currently only 0.017% of our inshore waters are fully protected (a site at Lundy Island) and marine biologists recommend that 20-30% should be fully protected.

Marine Reserves NOW
With 60% of UK fisheries either at unsustainable or maximum yield levels, and destructive fishing techniques destroying long-lived marine life, it is important to create a network of areas protected to varying levels to ensure the survival of our native marine life and fisheries industry.
To this end, zoos and aquariums are joining the likes of BBC Presenter Kate Humble and Hollywood movie star Ted Danson, in helping to inform the public of the issue and encouraging the public to sign an electronic voting form (vote here NOW!) . The petition will passed on to Ben Bradshaw MP, who is overseeing the development of the Marine Bill, to help persuade him to formulate a protected area network in our inshore waters.
