Save the Rhinos campaign officially closed on 7th September 2006 having raised an amazing €515,842 (the target was €350,000). This has enabled not only the original 13 projects to all be supported but also an additional eight that were on the waiting list.
Not only has the campaign exceeded it’s fundraising target but it has also raised the profile of zoos as serious supporters of conservation with the public and rhino conservation organisations. In addition, zoos in North America had the opportunity to participate in the campaign when the International Rhino Foundation, on behalf of AZA, facilitate a North American wide campaign as inspired by the EAZA campaign. This campaign was launched in January 2006.
Within Europe, BIAZA collections did very well raising a total of £100,000, some 30% of the campaign target. Well done us particularly as not all these collections had rhinos!!!
