Sustained Breeding of Luzon Bleeding Heart Dove and Mindanao Bleeding Heart Dove
The aims of the project were to maintain sustainable population of both Gallicolumba species at Bristol Zoo and to support the European studbook through reproduction and dispersal of birds to other collections.
Field Conservation
Both species of dove have been housed at Bristol for several years with breeding occurring every year from 1994 in G luzonica and 1998 in G criniger.
Bleeding Heart Doves Both species are managed as ESBs at Bristol and we have made significant contributions to the ESB in numbers bred and dispersed. G criniger is listed by IUCN as endangered and G luzonica as near threatened, both species serve as good taxon for husbandry training and lessons learnt from these species can be transferred to more critically threatened species of Gallicolumba. We produced Husbandry Guidelines for these birds with this in mind and have distributed these widely.
They also serve as flagship species for conservation work that Bristol Zoo carries out with our partners in the Philippines. We have produced birds to at least 5th generation for Luzon bleeding hearts and 3rd for Mindanao’s at Bristol, proving the viability and sustainability of the programe.
