Isle of Wight Zoo

We are the Island’s original zoo which is located just a stone’s throw from the safe sandy beaches of Sandown Bay on the eastern side of the IOW. Our animal collection is nestled within the remains of a Napoleonic fort which makes for an impressive backdrop for a large number of big cats and primates alongside other small mammal, reptile and invertebrate species. Over the years the IOW Zoo has operated much as a sanctuary offering a long-term home to individuals previously owned by circuses or kept as pets. Non-breeding animals have also been accommodated to ensure they continue to receive optimum welfare in their retirement. The zoo team pride themselves in caring equally for the well-being of the animals and the visitors who come to meet them. The day revolves around the legendary zoo tour lead by one of our fabulous hosts. In-between stopping off for inspiring keeper talks, feeding sessions and handling encounters, you’ll get to know your host and be able to chat to them about all aspects of zoo life. Special animal experiences such as ‘big cat training sessions’ can be pre-booked as can birthday parties and other activities. Scrummy hot and cold food is available from the café which also houses some of our smaller residents. We offer formal education visits to suit all needs and have an education centre should the weather take a turn for the worse. |

There are so many different animals to meet you won't know where to start! Marvel at the sheer ‘roar' power of the tigers in the Big Cat House or spy upon the mischievous primates on Monkey Island. Getting up, close and personal with the residents of the park is what it's all about. Since opening its doors to the public in 1984, Shepreth Wildlife Park, set in natural grounds, has become one of East Anglia’s major attractions and is home to tigers, otters, monkeys, reptiles and even creepy crawlies!. There’s so much to do from daring to enter the Nocturnal House, to playing ‘pirates’ or even stroking a cockroach! The park also provides lots of unique experiences to book, from hand-feeding the ring-tailed lemurs to playing with meerkats in Meerkat Manor. It truly is a fun day out for all the family! |

West Midland Safari & Leisure Park

|
Since its inception in 1973 the West Midland Safari Park has emerged as one of the country’s premier wildlife parks. Situated 30km miles south of Birmingham the 90h site comprises a ‘drive through’ route home to cheetah, African hunting dogs, Sumatran tigers, Indian rhino and addax. Pedestrian areas include a reptile house, sea lion theatre, hippo lake and the country’s biggest ‘walk through’ lemur exhibit. But don’t think conventionally. Rather think too of the restoration of Atlantic rain forest in Brazil, the Philippine spotted deer project in the Philippines, pioneering work at the parks research centre in Namibia, SSSI restoration and saving the critically endangered adder back home. For this is the remit of a modern zoological collection. |

Castle Espie’s tranquil setting offers the best views of Strangford Lough, County Down and is home to Ireland’s largest collection of native and exotic water-birds. The centre has the most significant habitat improvement of its kind in Ireland, including restored lagoons, grasslands, salt marshes and reed beds. In autumn visitors can witness almost the entire population of migratory Brent Geese. Throughout June and July, the duckery becomes home to a huge number of ducklings, goslings and cygnets. We hand rear many endangered species of duck from our waterfowl collection in order to ensure their survival as they can be vulnerable to predation in the waterfowl gardens. The centre is truly a magical place for all ages offering wild woodland walks, soft play areas, events and workshops, art exhibitions, retail therapy and after your visit you can relax in the Loughshore Café over coffee or lunch. |

There are many other animals besides, from meerkats to zebras, and from parrots to painted dogs. There is a whole programme of ranger talks and feeding times for visitors to follow during the day.
