About The Role

An exciting opportunity to work alongside the Engagement & Learning Manager to coordinate volunteers, events and engagement on site as part of the Species Survival Fund, a 2 year project: Wetter For Waders: Enhancing Somerset’s Coastal Wetlands. You'll be part of our team based at the Steart Marshes and Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserves. This will include supporting volunteers, community engagement and programming engagement activities.

This is a fixed term contract until 28th February 2026. This is a part time position, working 15 hours a week over 2 days.

As one of the largest of wetlands managed by WWT and an integral coastal component of the wider Somerset landscape, this is a fantastic opportunity to learn about wetland conservation, restoration and creation. You will be a key advocate in communicating the power of wetlands, exploring ways of engaging new audiences and assist in monitoring the success of improved access, interpretation and activities. Sharing how cutting edge management techniques support the increase in abundance of rare and protected wetland habitats and species.

Wetter For Waders is funded by the Government's Species Survival Fund. The fund was developed by Defra and its Arm's-Length Bodies. It is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with Natural England and the Environment Agency.

About You

To join as our Assistant Engagement Officer you'll bring:

  • Experience in communicating with a wide range of audiences
  • Experience and willingness to play an active part of a small team
  • Experience of working with a wide diversity of communities and being engaged in positive stakeholder consultation and audience development
  • Demonstrable experience of achieving outcomes by working with volunteers and motivating others
  • Experience in different methodologies for engagement, consultation and evaluation
  • Good IT skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Full UK driving licence as you will be required to drive to the reserve and possibly other sites.

We are looking for a engaging and motivated person, with an ability to prioritise work loads and be able to motivate volunteers. An ability to manage budgets and resources effectively whilst remaining creative when delivering innovative programmes and materials for different audiences. An understanding of working in close liaison with local communities will be key for this role.

Hybrid working is possible with this role, but only on occasions as a key part of the role is to be present on site and available to the volunteers.
